FORT LAUDERDALE: Proudly Hosts Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth Debut. Once again Fort Lauderdale particpates in a historic event that is helping build a strong foundation as a major destination city. The meeting of the Great Grande Dames remembrances the nearly 40 years when the beautiful and lustrous Queen Elizabeth 2 or QE2 once graced Port Everglades as its winter home. The QE2 was retired in 2008.
Cunard Line’s newest luxury cruise ship, the Queen Elizabeth ship slipped quietly into Fort Lauderdale’s Port Everglades during its debut Sunday. Rendezvousing with the line’s Queen Victoria ocean liner, both ships stopped in Fort Lauderdale prior to beginning their around-the-world cruises. The new cruise ship conveys an abundance of Old World charm, improving 80 years of port of calls made by Cunard’s prestigious luxury ocean liners.
The golden statue of royalty exhumes luxury. From its three-deck theater complete with private boxes and crystal chandeliers. At the onboard ceremony commemorating the ship’s maiden call, Port Director Phil Allen said “There’s nothing like the history, the elegance, the tradition and sophistication of the two Queens,”
Launched in October of 2010 and built at a cost of $634 million the newest Queen Elizabeth integrates many classic details of the original 1938 liner that was once the world’s largest cruise ship. Grand staircase, a two-deck-ballroom and a statue of the queen painted in 22-karat gold. Memorabilia from the first two Elizabeths, both retired: include such items as black and white photos and the ship’s bell.
