Fort Lauderdale is found in South Florida, just north of Miami. This is one of the most popular destinations for travelers in the area and for those relocating to the Miami area. The city is most known for the amazing beaches and is most known as the “Venice of America.”
Over 10 million visitors come to the city every year for the beaches, canal system, yachting and the proximity to Miami. Fort Lauderdale has over 100 marinas and boatyard, along with 42,000 yachts and plenty of other boating attractions. The area is one of the biggest boating areas in the United States.
Fort Lauderdale is also known for the amazing restaurants and nightclubs found throughout. Over 4,000 restaurants are found within driving distance, along with 120 nightclubs.
This area was first known as the “New River Settlement” and started as a settlement for 70 settlers along New River. This area used to be home to the Seminole Indians and many of the early settlers traded with this tribe.
Other than the incredible tourism, the city of Fort Lauderdale is most known for the lifestyle it provides. The typical Florida beaches provide what most residents are looking for, but the nightlife, arts, culture, music and sports scenes found here make it the city most recognize.
Of course, when Spring Break rolls around, just like many other destinations in Florida, Fort Lauderdale becomes a hot spot. These tourists tend to stay at the beach and spend time in the nightclubs.
Other things Fort Lauderdale is known for include:
- The Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop – A massive indoor/outdoor flea market.
- The International Swimming Hall of Fame
- Hugh Taylor Birch State Park
- The Henry E. Kinney Tunnel on US Route 1 – Only public tunnel in Florida.
- James Randi Education Foundation
It’s easy to lump Fort Lauderdale into the group of destination cities for tourism, but it’s more than just a place for tourism. This is a great area to live and provides the full Florida experience without the overwhelming downtown feel of a big city.
